Senior Care for Pets

As your pet ages, they become more susceptible to illnesses, pains, and aches rendering them incapable of leading an active life. The risks of arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hormone disorders, and kidney and liver problems all increase with age. Our senior wellness program can help your pet remain fit and healthy as they enter their golden years. To discuss the program in detail, call us at 902-562-5551 and we’d be happy to help.

What is included in the senior wellness program?

As part of the senior wellness program, we recommend bringing your senior pet in to have their baseline exam and diagnostic workup. This helps us record your pet’s health which we use to track changes and determine their condition through the next few years. Apart from this, we recommend regular veterinary exams and testing for diseases so we can detect them early. We also help identify and reduce pain, recommend nutrition and exercise plans to fit your pet’s needs and suggest environmental changes to keep your pet as comfortable as possible.

When should I bring in my pet for a baseline exam?

For dogs, we suggest they get a baseline exam when they turn 7-years-old and for cats when they turn 8-years-old.

What are common diseases that affect senior dogs and cats?

Common diseases that affect senior dogs are obesity, cancer, organ dysfunction, osteoarthritis, blindness and deafness, cognitive dysfunction syndrome, and dental disease.

Diseases commonly seen in senior cats include chronic renal disease, dental disease, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, and cancer.
